Cave Refuge

after really knocking out the cobwebs from my 3DS painting hand, and watching some sweet playbacks on the Colours gallery for inspiration, I decided to try and redo a piece that was apparently so old and horrible I didn't bother to load it onto the blog.

I saved the Playback on this painting if you want to take a look!

3DS Painting studies

I decided to break out my 3DS for some painting studies. My attempts at getting started go from "Wtf???" to "Cleared out Cobwebs" as illustrated below;

Whats New

With the release of Titan Tale being delayed, and my future with DreamCloud Games a little up in the air (my contract ends in August - tomorrow!) they never the less put me to work on helping develop something new for one of their next titles.

Titan Tale has run into some issues, namely with Apple experiencing problems, and then we got some feedback from our testers that need to be addressed anyway. Still, I'm not sure what's to come! Ahh freelance life. I didn't choose it, it chose... well actually I did. Whoops.

Anyway, I can't show you much else, not yet anyway!
otherwise I've been working on more Refuge stuff. Exciting, and a lot easier a task to tackle after having been thrown through the gauntlet of creating an ENTIRE GAME'S worth of assets in a MONTH AND A HALF.

Remember Me

 Please... Remember me...

Sketched up while listening to nothing in particular, although "Another Chance" by Alex Clare comes to mind.

Refuge character studies. Alex and... someone else? Someone familiar as well.
Hmm.

Devil's Advocate

A concept doodle I did the other day of a character in "The Refuge" going rogue. (Although I can imagine him and Sebastian in my previous post to be besties right now)

The Refuge: gags and studies

Most of these have been on my facebook, a couple haven't!

These below were some rejected ideas, but still good for posterity!

This one was from a promo piece I was working on. got really far on it, as you can see, but I decided a redraw was in order when I realized it wouldn't have the right look and composition I was going for.
His condition doesn't get any better though ;c

Loss

It's one of those days, so have a miserable, wet William Herondale.
I forgot what chapter it's from exactly, but it's sort of after the holy water scene.
..
or, you know he's just shirtless.
And wet.

Speedpaint: School Photo

Well, it's of someone fictional, but that's what it reminds me of, wouldn't you say?

At the Edmonton Expo, I got to watch one of the teachers speedpaint a portrait. I don't know about everyone else, but I love to watch artist's work as it tends to make things "click" faster when I see the process in action! So I decided to give it a try! Ookami up there is my guinea pig since he's my oldest character creation, and it was fun giving him an edge of realism.

I spent a lot of time on this for being a "speed painting"- the problem I run into is that I see the errors along the way so I fret over them. A habit I want to chip away since the urge to fix all the things can be overwhelming! As it is I had to consciously stop myself.

Anyway, already looking forward to the next attempt. Onward!

Sketches: Ghost and Shadow Hunters

Updated sketch pages collecting all of my recent Supernatural sketch studies to include Castiel, and the actors playing the Mortal Instruments characters in the upcoming City of Bones movie to include Lily Collins!

And another stray Winchester of course.

Sketch: The Winchester Bros

And a Castiel- "Dean, it's not funny, the voice says I'm almost out of minutes."

I drew these quick while we were catching up on Season 7. I'd like to think I'm getting okay at caricature-ing them, but I'm just going to keep on practicing! Also a quick interpretation of their differing body-types.

Sam's sideburns are characters of their own, I will say.

Sketches: Browder and Ackles

Sketches of Ben Browder and Jensen Ackles respectively (Ackles is below the line) to do some studies of their faces. One of our protagonists in The Refuge has a look that's been decided to be a combination of these two, hence my notes on facial construction.

How odd would it be to say these things you notice to the people you notice them? As an artist it's just something you see, but I don't think the person would be so comfortable.

I need to practice my Ackles more, I think. But my Browder is looking okay, which is good because there is a Farscape picture I'd like to do...

Sketch: Ookami The DJ

Since the last upload was a RE upload, here's a new one! A semi-realistic pen sketch of the male protagonist in "The Refuge" named "Ookami". He's popped up many times before, and this is certainly not the last time you'll see him. At least this time Alex isn't teasing him!

I'd like to do a series of these, I think! It'd be fun.

Tell me, how old do you think he looks here? I'm curious.

Sketches: RE Herondale and Blackthorn

As promised, the full page of sketches for mister Blackthorn and Herondale, respectively.
Full body sketches soon!

Sketches: Blackthorn and Herondale

Sketches for an image I have planned just for fun. Julian Blackthorn (or my version based off of what little we know of him) from the upcoming "Dark Artifices" series by Cassandra Clare, and Will Herondale from the current "Infernal Devices" series.

Julian is pure design speculation, but I'm happy with these first passes. That hair was a real pain to get ride and there are many more sketches on the page (and many more to come) that I will scan fully later. (I may decide to edit out the rest of my design notes - I can get pretty hard on myself!)

Will I already had a rough design for him first based off of Street Angel's interpretation, but I'd like to think I've made a few noticeable tweaks since then! Especially since my concept for Jace is pretty solid and the two have that relative connection. I may thin out that jaw line a teeny bit but otherwise, this fella is good to go.
But anyway, Will just knows how beautiful he is, being a Herondale and all.
