Cave Refuge

after really knocking out the cobwebs from my 3DS painting hand, and watching some sweet playbacks on the Colours gallery for inspiration, I decided to try and redo a piece that was apparently so old and horrible I didn't bother to load it onto the blog.

Some promotional art/style test for The Refuge! You won't see this guy for a while, but that obviously hasn't stopped me from drawing him all the time. But here he's finalized for his appearance in the comic.

The Refuge: Interior Study

 

Going back to Refuge stuff! This time... well, self explanatory I suppose. Another sketch exploring the main chamber of the Refuge. I've had the basic concept for this interior roughed out for a while, but with my wife's help and direction, we're really opening up the space and giving it life.

As it is, some things are still being changed around, but if you recall a more recent previous sketch, we're getting a better idea on how to handle this potentially complex space from different angles by relying on key visual elements that make up the spaces they're in. 

By all logic, that means the crew from the sketch is perched behind that large rock just left of the entrance and that's okay. Except that they found him anyway. Sigh. I'll sketch up some better hiding spots in the future.

Here we have Ookami with some sort of needle gun in his neck. Is it something helpful or hindering? 

I know I draw this guy a lot, and I will continue to do so. He's kind of my charge when it comes to The Refuge.

Peaceful Moment

 

Sketched up while listening to nothing in particular. Although I would say Aqueous Transmission from Incubus is a good accompaniment.  

Alex enjoys some time in a gentle river. Mainly some conceptual work for the Refuge. Lots of time spent in the forests, best to get a feel for it, right?  (as much as I can in pen anyway.

 The sound of his voice as he sang the words made her feel warm from head to toe. The song was appropriate, considering full scope of all that had transpired between them, but right now that didn't matter. Not when she felt more complete than she had been in a long time.

"That's a wonderful sentiment." She said, nestling closer against him. "...but can you do me one favor?"

"Anything." he said into the back of her neck.

"Cut your damn hair." 

She felt him laugh. "I'll think about it." 

"If you don't, then I want a divorce."
"We're not even married."

"We won't ever be if you keep looking like a hippie."

I've had that mini scene in my mind since I sketched it! So happy to share it now. 

A *possible* scene far into the future of the Refuge. What happened? I don't know!

Bonus sketch for the week. Why?  Well frankly I'm not thrilled at how it turned out. But hey, sketching on the bus can only do so much. and like I said; that's what first drafts are for!

And anyway, what's up with these two? I thought they were all friends!  Or at least cool with each other?

A bit more peaceful of a scene. Although I gave some slightly wrong impressions in it. Mainly insinuating that the gentleman with the guitar (Kain) is a singer. He is not. Ookami (on the far left) is. But I can hardly be blamed for lack of foresight when these are started first thing in the morning on a bumpy bus ride! That's what second drafts are for anyway.
Also Rin (next to Kain) can be seen here. I need to draw her more, as she is important too.

Dreaming of Tearing You Apart

 Ookami is an interesting guy to me. He broods, but often with good reason, and not to the point where he is downright mopey and tragic. He is actually a big goofball.  But there is a very visceral side to him that I have been exploring more lately.
And it is fun.

This one was from a promo piece I was working on. got really far on it, as you can see, but I decided a redraw was in order when I realized it wouldn't have the right look and composition I was going for.

This comic has been in my to do pile for OVER a year. Unlike the City of Glass fan comic, this one has too many in-corrections for me to overlook. I decided it'd be a more economical use of my time if I scrapped the pages I had and reworked them from the ground up.
